An overnight is a different kind of booking from an hour or an evening, and not only because it is longer. The pace changes. There is no clock being watched, no return drive being calculated, no point in the evening where things have to start winding down. For a lot of visitors to Mykonos it is the only booking type that really suits how the island works — because on Mykonos, the evening does not begin until eleven and it does not end when you expect it to.

What an overnight actually means

An overnight booking typically runs from late evening through to the following morning — most commonly from around 10pm or 11pm until 9am or 10am. The exact window is agreed when you book rather than assumed, because people’s nights on this island vary enormously. Someone coming back from a beach club at 4am wants a different overnight from someone having dinner at nine.

What matters is that both the start and the end are agreed in advance, in specific terms. A booking with a defined shape is a relaxed booking. A booking where nobody is quite sure when it finishes is not.

Breakfast and departures

Overnights end without ceremony. A companion leaves at the agreed time by private driver; you do not need to arrange transport or get up to organise anything. If you would like the morning to be more leisurely — breakfast on the terrace, a later departure — say so when you book and we will build it into the booking and the rate rather than improvising at 8am.

Where overnights work best

Private villas

Villas are the natural setting for an overnight. There is space, there is privacy, there is no reception and no checkout time. If you are in a villa for a week, an overnight is almost always a better arrangement than two separate shorter bookings.

The practical points from any villa booking apply here too: send a map pin and a gate code, and mention if there are other guests in the house.

Hotels and suites

Overnights at hotels are entirely normal and most Mykonos properties are relaxed about them. Suites and rooms with private entrances are the easiest. The only thing worth checking is whether your property has any policy on overnight visitors — most do not, but the small family-run places occasionally do, and it is better to know at 9pm than at 2am.

Aboard a boat

If you have chartered a yacht overnight, a companion can stay aboard. This needs more notice than a villa or hotel overnight and needs to be agreed with your crew in advance, but it is a genuinely memorable version of the booking. Anchorages around Rhenia and the south of the island are the usual setting.

Overnights need more notice than short bookings, for the obvious reason: a companion who takes an overnight is not available for anything else that night. In May, June, September and October a day’s notice is usually enough. In the first three weeks of August, plan several days ahead if you want a particular companion, and understand that late requests on peak nights may simply not be possible.

Deposits and confirmation

Overnights are confirmed properly rather than provisionally, because they commit a whole evening. Depending on the booking and the notice, a deposit may be requested. If it is, you will be told the amount and the terms before you agree to anything — never afterwards.

Rates and what is included

Overnight rates are quoted as a single block rather than as a multiple of the hourly rate, and they work out substantially better per hour than a short booking. The rate depends on the companion, the length of the window and the location, and is agreed in full before confirmation.

As with every booking, what you are arranging is a companion’s time and company for that period. Nothing beyond that is implied, promised or arranged by us; what happens between consenting adults in private is entirely their own business.

Why overnights suit Mykonos specifically

On most islands an overnight is a preference. On Mykonos it is close to a practical necessity if you want the evening to make sense. Dinner in Chora starts at ten. Bars fill at midnight. The clubs at Paradise and the beach venues run until the sun is genuinely up. A two-hour booking dropped into the middle of that is fighting the island’s rhythm.

An overnight lets the evening run the way Mykonos actually runs it — dinner, a drink somewhere, back to the villa at three, and a slow morning. It is also, per hour, the best value booking we arrange.

What to agree before the night

The window, in specific terms

The most common cause of an awkward overnight is a vague one. “Overnight” means different things to different people, and on an island where an evening can begin at eleven and end at six, the gap between two reasonable interpretations is large. Agreeing a start and an end time in specific terms at the point of booking removes the entire problem.

If you genuinely do not know when your night will start — because you are out and it depends — say that instead, and we will agree a window rather than a fixed time. A flexible arrangement made deliberately is fine; an unspecified one made by accident is not.

The setting

Tell us where the overnight will actually happen and, if it is a villa, whether anyone else is in the house. An overnight in a villa shared with six other guests is a perfectly normal booking, but it is a different booking from one in a private house, and it is much better arranged with that known.

The morning

Departures are easier when they have been discussed. If you want a companion gone by eight because you have a boat to catch, say so. If you would rather the morning was unhurried, with breakfast on the terrace and a departure around eleven, say that instead and we will price the booking for it. Both are ordinary requests; neither works well as a surprise.

Overnights in different settings

Comparing villa, hotel and boat

All three work, and they are genuinely different experiences:

• Villa — the most space, the most privacy, and no checkout. The default and the best of the three for most people.
• Hotel or suite — straightforward, entirely normal on Mykonos, and the easiest at short notice because there is no drive into the hills.
• Aboard — the most memorable and the most logistically demanding. Needs the most notice and needs agreeing with your crew.

Remote properties

Overnights make more sense than any other booking type at the remote end of the island. If you are at Kalafatis or out past Ano Mera, a two-hour booking involves an hour of driving; an overnight involves the same drive once. The economics and the experience both improve substantially with length, which is why most bookings we take from the east coast are evening or overnight rather than hourly.

Season and availability

Overnight availability is the first thing to tighten as the season peaks. Through May, June, late September and October, an overnight can usually be arranged with a day’s notice or less. From mid-July, and especially through the first three weeks of August, overnights on weekend nights are frequently committed several days in advance. If your trip includes a specific night you know you want, that is the booking to make before you fly rather than after you land.
